On an evening in the spring of 1994, I stood in the offices of Alternative Business Systems and Alternative Business Staffing in Washington, DC, as a new partner. My friend Robert Douglas had just gotten the keys to the office suite, and I remember opening a very cheap bottle of Champagne to celebrate the occasion. I was twenty-six years old at the time.
This was the first of four companies that I would claim ownership of. Alternative Business Systems was a company built on new technology, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which allowed paper-heavy companies to realize savings by digitizing their files. At the time, it was a revolutionary technology, allowing humans to do more than they ever could before and save money in the process. I was a small business owner—and I remember simultaneously feeling the exhilaration and the weight of that fact—in control of and responsible for my future and the futures of those who depended on me.

Fast-forward to a workshop I co-led at the Georgetown School of Business in October of 2024. I met an incredible group of founders and small business owners who were there to learn about marketing. They were not there to have their hands held or their visions interpreted by an agency but to have someone give them the knowledge and tools to do it themselves. “Point me in the right direction” was the vibe I got from each and all of them.
The Small Biz CMO was created for these kinds of business leaders.
As I think about it, Small Biz CMO is a logical step on my entrepreneurial journey and an evolution of the ethos I established thirty years ago. It is the culmination of my experience and the purest expression of my values. Through Small Biz CMO, I seek to bring fairness to the business community—making the kind of marketing expertise available to small businesses that is typically the domain of large firms. I also designed the BrandPilot™Blueprints to make my skills as scalable as possible so I can assist as many owners and founders as I can. I want to free the small business owner from open-ended, expensive agency relationships that may or may not have their best interests at heart, and can stymie an otherwise promising idea.
While I am open to consulting, my business model is primarily built on providing you my guidance in a single package, and not in stages so I can rack up billable hours.

I take full advantage of Generative AI to conduct research and uncover insights that would otherwise elude a human.
